Course Description
The course is designed to address eight principles of yoga (Ashtanga) with equal weight so that the students become familiar with the essence of yogic paths. There are many Yogic paths such as Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bakti Yoga, and Juana Yoga but the truth is the same – to lead the complete embodiment of virtues, strength, balance, serenity, peace, joy, happiness, contentment, and wisdom (Samadhi). Class content includes study of Vinyasa Ashtanga yoga and classical Sivananda yoga (sequenced postures), pranayama ((breathing), swadyaya/juana yoga (yoga philosophy), dhyana (meditation), and Bakti yoga (devotion).

This is theoretical and experiential course. Theories give understanding conceptually and practice gives you meaning to the theories. Swami Sivananda once said “a ounce of practice is equal to tons of theory”. Both, however, are necessary for you to have a thorough understanding of yoga tradition.

Tradition keeps teaching alive. You also become a part of tradition when you become a teacher. You will teach based on your direct experience and direct knowing (knowledge), and the most importantly according to the teacher we have been given by the ancient yoga master and rishes such as Shakaracharaya, Patanjili, Sivananda, krishnamacharaya, etc. You serve as a conduit to pass down the teaching and knowledge to others. This is the true teaching.

Weekly Practice
Every Wednesday or Saturday (15 times per semester for total of two semesters) when we meet we will have the first hour focusing on yogic theories and its applications to daily living. Range of topic are from Vedanta – non dualistic philosophy, yoga sutras, thought culture, raja yoga, kundalini yoga, juana yoga, ayuvedic medicine, yogic and ayuvedic diet, kriya, karma & reincarnation, three bodies, four paths, of yoga, seven bhoomikas, astral body (awakening of kundalini & charkas), meditation (japa, etc. You will have self sadhana practice every day as a part of home work. Remember “direct experience” is the essence of learning.

Then the next two hours is designated for synthesis of yoga practice including, asana, pranayama, meditation, bhakti yoga (chanting), and yoga sutra. Satsanga (good companies) will be at the end of practice with pasad (blessed food) and it lasts about 1/2 hour. So you are more than welcomed to bring healthy and yogic food to share. Make sure that the food you bring has pranic values.

The last weekend of May 2007 has been scheduled for 3 days yoga retreat at Grass Valley Sivananda Ashram or other location. It is designed for intense sadhana practice and graduation celebration. So we offer 5-8 hour Level One Certification Workshop or spend 2-3 days at SchoolYoga Insitute during Fall Semester (Septmeber through December) , 1-2 days level Two Certification seminar or spend 2-3 days at SchoolYoga Institute twice during Spring Semester (February through May), 3-5 days level three Certification intensive and graduation Retreat or 3-5 day summer yoga retreat. Three levels of certification teacher training program enables all trainees to immediately implement the SchoolYoga curriculum to their daily teaching and their own practice.

Three Levels of Teacher Training

Level 1 Certification: Introduction (5-8 hours) or 2-3 day at SchoolYoga Institute once during Fall Semester
The Introduction is a five-eight hours long workshop to introduce fundamental of the SchoolYoga Institute curriculum (e.g., Ashtanga Vinyasa Flow, Sivananda Hatha Flow, Schoolyoga, AthleteYoga, 8 Limb Yoga, Yoga synthesis, etc.). It provides introductory training in Yoga poses, teaching techniques, yogic theories and practice, and yoga anatamy/physiology/kinesiology.

Level 1 Certification Participants learn the basics of the yoga philosophy and have the opportunity to discover whether SchoolYoga Institute curriculum touches their passion. By the end of the workshop the participants receives Level 1 Manual and Certificate and is capable to implement SchoolYoga into their daily teaching and self Practice.

At least a year of yoga experience is helpful and preferred, but not mandatory. We ask participants to bring an open heart and a love of yoga and students!

Level 2 Certification: One or Two Day Intensive (10-16 hrs) or 2-3 days at SchoolYoga Institute twice during Spring Semester
The one or two Day Intensive Workshop is a rigorous course, requiring substantial and diligent study of yoga philosophy, anatomy/Physiology, teaching pedagogy, child development and postures purification. As the participant becomes grounded in the theoretical and philosophical foundation of the School Yoga, she/he also applies theory and philosophy by student teaching at least 10 separate classes before attending the Level 2 workshop.

Level 3 Certification: 3-5 day Yoga Synthesis and Graduation Retreat during the month of June (50 hours)
After completion of Recommended Internship and Practicum, you may start Level 3 of the SchoolYoga Teacher Training Program. It is a 3-5 day synthesis workshop during which each participant demonstrates their comprehension of and facility with School Yoga techniques, concepts and methods. They will also obtain information regarding current knowledge regarding yoga sutra, pranayama, kriya, mutra, meditation, anatomy/physiology, and yoga research update.

It is a celebration of the work and dedication each participant has completed, the lessons each has learned and the personal growth each has begun through the Training Program. This culmination is an integration and consolidation as well as an opportunity to share ideas, develop community and enjoy the sharing of information, ideas and hearts. The benefits of their hard work move forward with a business as a CSYIT (Certified SchoolYoga Institute Teacher). At the end of Level 3 each successful candidate receives a diploma in recognition of the completion of the Training Program. The diploma confirms the completion of a minimum of 200 hours training in the School Yoga program and successful mastery of the School Yoga curriculum.

By custom, the graduation takes place in anyplace around the country. As CSYT grows, we expect to schedule Graduations in other locations around the world.

Practicum (20 hours)
Student must teach SchoolYoga to school age students or adults no less than 20 hours (including 10 contact hours and 10 non-contact hours). A trainee is required to teach 10 classes at Schoolyoga Institute or yoga studios with mentor presnce (contact hours) and another 10 classes at other settings (e.g., school, health club, yoga studios, etc.)

Internship (125 hours)
Internship is a period of mentor-guided and self-directed home study or some times through correspondence. The direct contact, however, with an assigned mentor is essential to success of Internship. A trainee is required 80 direct contact hours with the mentor out of 125 total Internship hours. It takes anywhere from 7 to 12 months to complete before taking Level 3 Certification and is a very individual process depending on each trainee’s time, work, family schedule and discipline.

The Internship is comprised of mandatory reading assignments, teaching experiences, and personal daily School Yoga practice, journaling, and in study with a qualified SchoolYoga ™ instructor. As with any professional training, only those who are truly committed will find The Practicum gratifying. All will find it difficult and challenging.

Most participants begin The Internship immediately after Level 1 workshop and keep the momentum going, although some wait and mull it over to make sure the School Yoga is their way. Those who show interested in pursuing Certified SchoolYoga Institute Instructor right away receive the Practicum Packet at the end of the Level 1 Workshop and are assigned mentors to guide them through the process. Mentors are located in close proximity and be able to communicate and contact in person.

Each mentor is a Certified SchoolYoga Institute Yoga Instructor and has completed all of the course requirements. Upon completion of the practicum packet, a trainee sends the packet to their mentor who reviews and evaluates the work and gives the participant feedback, constructive criticism and guidance. When the mentor is satisfied that the participant has successfully meet requirement of the practicum packet, the mentor makes a recommendation to School Yoga concerning the participant’s readiness for Level 3 Instructor Certification workshop. In consultation with the mentor, the Program Director(s) and others who may have valuable input, School Yoga will determine whether the participant should allow to attend the final stage of certification or requires additional work.

Student teaching can take place at Schoolyoga Institute (10 direct contact hours) or wherever a trainee is able to gather a group of students or children together (non-contact hours). Some teach children who attend their schools or childcare centers or hospitals; some teach children of friends, nieces or nephews, grandkids, or their own children; and some teach children in their building, neighborhood or community center, classroom or at a place of worship. The possibilities are truly limitless.
